Something Completely Different

In the summer of 2010, I discovered a new way to quilt.  I took a class on painted quilts from Katie Pasquini Masopust.  It was four days of painting and quilting fun and opened up a whole new way of thinking about quilting.

I'm guessing that Katie has a book in the works to teach this, but in a nutshell, we painted and fused on canvas, cut and pieced, quilted and stretched the new artwork over a frame.  I've only done a few and there are many more zipping around through my brain.

This was the first one I liked well enough to finish.  I like the bold colors and the simplicity.  It was just colors and marks which is good practice for me who has trouble just being kind of random.

I grew up in Southern Oregon where there were tons of pear orchards.  Pears are a fun subject and I had some pear fabric, so this was my first pear painting.

One of the fun things about this process, is playing with the leftovers.

And the leftovers of the leftovers.

Barbara is beginning to find the pear thing a bit creepy (sort of like the scissors in the movie "Dead Again").   This, of course, has only spurred me on to want to make one more really small one from the leftovers of the leftovers of the leftovers.

There are several more in various stages of completion and I'm suddenly inspired to do finish them and start some more.  The process is a little messy, especially when I really get into it.  I accidentally customized a lamp in the basement with paint splatter.  Future splattering will take place on the grass in the back yard.  Some of us have to learn the hard way.

Enjoy.
